I thought I had heard just about everything - but apparently not. Did you know that some photography businesses now offer parents the optional extra of airbrushing out their children's cuts and bruises in school photographs for a fee?
Professor Matt Sanders from the University of Queensland - father of the brilliant Triple P parenting program says it is a worrying trend and I would be asking why on Earth would you want your child's photo at this age touched up?
We all look back on school photos and think 'gee, we're not looking brilliant there', but that's just part of the journey. Every photo that we look at is part of our history - it has a story behind it. It's a conversation starter, it's a point of reflection about a family's journey through life and a child's journey through life -let's not distort it....

I couldn't agree with you more Michael.It's been happening at our secondary school for a few years. Retouching braces, pimples etc, is big business. I think it's really sad.

ok...I'll play devil's advocate...I can think of times when photoshopping a child's individual photo could be re-touched, I disagree with companies 'fleecing' parents to 'shop' photos.
I think sometimes, if the technology is available (no 'sponsor plug here')
I've just had a sneak peak at a new 'tool' in the latest Photoshop release. It's called 'content aware fill' if you're really interested in how 'easy' it is to actually fix up particular 'flaws' in an image. Google it...there is a youtube video that demonstrates how easy the latest 'tool' addition can remove or 'heal areas of a photo.
Scenario - A child has a really snotty nose...not just a little runny nose....I'm talking full on green, crusty bubbling mucus.
Some schools are blessed with teachers who will actually grab a tissue and help clean a child's nose up, encourage them to blow their nose, over and above the suggested B.B.C daily routine. Whole school Breath, Blow, Cough. Tissues in the bin, hands washed, start school day :0)
Some kids aren't so lucky, and come school including photo days with crusty, snotty green noses. OK you got it......How many kids in Australia do you think could use the aid of a little 'extra' help to at least get rid of festy looking mucus caked around their noses?
If you watch the YouTube video on 'content aware fill' you will see just how quick and easy the latest technology makes it for official 'School Photographic Companies' to make small 'kind' changes.
The competing companies should offer the service free......in this time of the official 'Economic Downturn', these companies should use these new tools to attract new business and retain existing clientele.
I do agree that retouching has been taken to unnecessary extremes which help foster unrealistic body image 'ideals'!
Just my Humble opinion though :0)
